This article got me thinking if there indeed may be a difference between a diary and a blog. Although the statistics are inaccurately presented to draw the conclusion, but to think about the headline, the ones who can answer this comfortably and rightly are very few because the domain itself of people who blog as well as maintain a diary/journal is limited. I am one of those lucky limited.
Having been blogging for around 1 year and maintaining a diary for 6-7 years now, I can say that there are indeed differences between a diary and a blog, but subtly so. There may indeed be differences but no topic can be exclusively set aside as being written in diaries only or blogs only.
Apart from the usual longevity factor differences related to either medium, while a diary is a more personal and generally has restricted access, blog is nothing but throwing open ideas, creations in public for adulation, revisions, discussion, criticism et al. So going on emotions side, to me my diary gives me a more personal feel than any blog of mine or anybody else; the ink, the writing and the impressions on the paper and even the awry letters and designs on the diary are simply inimitable.
A blog is meant for observations, individual opinions/interpretations on a news item, articles, journals, reviews. In fact, it’s something synonymous to journalism, covering all and everything under the sun. Blogs are more about someone’s passion, interests and hobbies. Like some maintain a technology blogs, some Photoshop edited photos, some pen humorous takes on things of this world. True, these may be penned by an enthusiast in one’s own journal as well but someone in need of some praise and motivation is more likely to use a blog. Similarly, someone caring to keep certain events of one’s life hidden from public purview would appropriately choose a diary.
A difference in language style ensues after this basic difference. While the one in diary can take more freedom with (mix of) language, words the same may not produce a desirable difference in case of blogs. Other differences arise because of availability of tools, while blogs can be made visually more appealing with plethora of tools available on cyber community, diary entries can still attract a lot of attention through original crafts, sketches which still are much more appreciated than the same in digital counterparts.
So which is the better medium and which is lesser. Well as the article itself lists a few things, things which you would like to share, collaborate, display in full glory are meant for blogs and you can earn pretty decent dough out of it. While the things that you wish to keep to yourself and a trusted few, and come back time and again and revisit it are more apt for the diary. And again the choice will definitely depend on the matters you wish to write, its sensitivity for you, its effect on others etc.
Anyways in the end both are a medium to write and interesting thing is to see them together rather than against each other. One says, your sad, happy and ecstatic moments, other tells about your inclinations, preferences, hobbies, triggers. In a way they gel with each other to put together in nearly complete totality a perfect you!

yeah....dude
u have said it rightly, they are two different medium & people with different views.... Diary is something personal, it brings bck those happy & sad moments in life......
And blog as u said is 4 ppl who require motivation on their writing skills :P
its also serves as a medium to share knowledge....
@arun: for ppl who require motivation ???..... well I think I started blogging because there were lot of things happening around me and I wanted a say in that!!
interesting topic.. and reminded me of the fact that i have not done an entry in my diary for long time... but yes some topics do overlap... e.g a few years back i would have written abt the trip to the village school or abt the trip to chamundi hills etc in a diary..
but now it is in a blog..
diary is personal.. what u write in diary is diffuclt to copy in a blog... length is one big reason..I guess it is the person who is the winner in a diary vs blog contest... both lead to some clarity in thought..
Nice article and nice comparison. Agree with you.
For me, a diary is something very personal which I can NOT share with anyone at any cost.. the words written on it are reflection of my mood, my mental state at that moment, be it sad or happy.
Well, in my case, I had started blogging 4 months back on similar assumptions where I thought no one (or max only my near ones) will visit & I can use my free flow thoughts on it. But off late it is being read by a variety of people and I sometimes feel that there will come a time where I won't be able to pen down my thoughts (all raw and naked) as freely as I want to without any polish to my words.
Till now I have managed somehow but still I have plenty of burning, bursting thoughts that want to come out. Probably they will go in my diary not here. :))
@sid: well as I have mentioned it depends on to the degree of sensitivity of the topic to the person as well....
let me tell you how... I wrote about my NGO trip in diary first because I thought no one will understand why I wished to work there when my friends were enjoying in Goa and I didn't want to debate on it so I wrote about it in my diary but later as my interaction with people grew I came to know that it is appreciated so I blogged about it.... it was not as sensitive to me anymore.....
@cuckoo.... this wud be your first comment on my blog... as regards sharing the diary...same with me yaar.... but sometimes I tend to get philosophical in my diary, small portions of which then creep into my blog... but then the reaction tells me if the thought was sensitive at all, if I find a good no. of people with similar opinion the sensitivity naturally decreases and I am open about it.... to give an example, what better than cry man cry
I think you too should try this... try to conceal your burning and bursting thoughts in myriads of your wonderful blogs and check out the reaction...it will definitely help desensitize on a lot of topics!!
Really? My first comments?? But I have read some of your earlier posts as well. Hmmm.. should have commented there.
Ohh you still remember cry man cry?? That's a big compliment for me !!
Well for your last senetnce, I would appreciate if you can read the comments on my posts "Tears of Joy" & "Feminism" (of course if you have time, cant force anyone).
Some people who come to my blog are just sick... they want me to write what THEY want to see (their own blog are horrible, they can't think of topics & writing stuff) & then it gets into arguments and in the process I feel like shifting again to diary system.
After all, the blog belongs to me, and I should be free to be able to write what I want not them.
@cuckoo..... well I do rem that because I did become open in accepting what your blog was about... more of that sometime later...
he he.... I am laughing because I just commented on "feminism"... well I think I will take it as if they are speaking their mind and I agree to disagree!!!
I am not explaining myself since I've commented on "feminism" speaking my mind and I may just fall in "sick" category just for that.
anyways will check out "tears of joy" soon and going by your interpretation I think I am blessed to have sensitive crowd (although minuscule in no.) visiting my blogs!!!
LOLLLLLL looks like I am compensating for all my previous comments (visits) to your blog !!
Saw your comments on my blog. No, you don't come under that 'sick' category. I always welcome different and honest views and me too agree to disagree !! It is all written in my blog.
By sick I meant, some people get irritated by reading some of my posts and ask me why I write such posts and that I should be doing something instead of writing !!! And I don't have any intentions to justify them what I do and what not. I definitely do more than them and more than what comes on my blog.
At most, I can tell them to mind their own business. ;) If they don't like my blog, they can stop visiting. As simple as that.
LOL... it seems we are chatting on my blog now...
anyways good to know that I am in the safe place... and yeah it feels bad when you say something that you;ve been dying to say and someone tells you that you should do better not writing that.... and it nowhere qualifies to me as speaking one's mind
I have been lucky not to come across such crass ppl.... or seems you write more on topics that hurt ego, shake-up one's mind to rethink.... and that is good whatsoever... some topics really make me think "shit!! even I was thinking about that... why didn't I write about it before her... now I can only do is put a comment in her blog"
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
